La Boite is one of Australia's leading theatre companies. It is a platform for inspired collaboration, seeking to produce and present theatre that draws on the full grammar of performance. Words, music, movement, the visual arts and contemporary performance contribute to a theatre that aims to invigorate minds and emotions.
La Boite has been at the forefront of change and development in theatre in Queensland for 85 years. La Boite's Roundhouse Theatre is an epic-intimate space that calls for a theatre that celebrates the theatrical. It is an arena of inquiry and a coliseum of the senses. As Australia's only purpose-built theatre-in-the-round - and flexible enough to be used as a thrust stage with the audience on three sides - our home stage offers a distinctive theatre experience.
La Boite's presents a main season of 5-7 productions. We look to new Australian work, fresh international theatre, great texts of the past, and to collaborations with diverse artists and organisations from across the nation and beyond. We chose work that is suited to our distinctive arena or in-the-round space and authentic to the contemporary world. We aim to converse with the times - to unwrap the past and scrutinise the present as a means of expressing our aspirations for the future.
We include work for children and young people and regularly tour regionally and nationally.
La Boite Indie is a curated season of four independent works, each of three weeks, occupying our reimagined 90-seat Roundhouse Theatre (reconfigured from 400 seats). By creating a much-needed new platform for work in Brisbane, La Boite Indie aims to nurture a more sustainable independent theatre culture, to cultivate new audiences, to enable closer ties between independent practice and La Boite, and to help create more outstanding, contemporary works for theatre. The space is offered rent-free to independent theatre companies and artists, and La Boite contributes practical producing, technical, marketing and artistic assistance.
La Boite Education is aimed at creating opportunities for people of all ages to reap the rewards of practical engagement with theatre and drama. We offer 32 weeks of acting master classes for adults, school holiday workshops for young people aged 7-18, professional development workshops for teachers, curriculum-based workshops for school students, internships for tertiary students and recent graduates, and corporate learning workshops for those in business. Our Ambassador program is a yearlong program for almost 200 high school and tertiary students from across Brisbane and beyond. Ambassadors attend all productions for free, meet with creative teams, enjoy free workshops through year, learn about La Boite programs, and take a leadership role in introducing the work of La Boite to their peers, schools, and families.
