History

Hale Street Theatre
Hale Street Theatre

The company began its life in 1925 as the Brisbane Repertory Theatre Society, making it one of the oldest, continuously operating theatre companies in Australia. In 1972, the Company changed its name when it opened a new theatre, La Boite Theatre, a purpose-built, 200-seat theatre-in-the-round in Hale Street, Milton. It remained in this theatre until 2004, when it moved to The Roundhouse Theatre.

La Boite has made a journey from 1920s community theatre company to one holding a key position in Australia's professional theatre landscape. In 1976, it employed its first professional Artistic Director, establishing a record of achievement in creative leadership and professional development within the Queensland theatre culture. In 1993, the Company completed its transformation to a fully professional enterprise.

La Boite Theatre Company embraces its living tradition of artistic endeavour, promoting a sense of creative continuity and cultural leadership within our community for more than 80 years. It has been the wellspring from which many Queensland artists and companies have been nurtured. Within this tradition, there is a deeply embedded way of doing, forged by the primacy of the artist in the theatre's creative history, the inherently innovative convention of theatre-in-the-round, and the political and social history of Queensland. This has provided a fitting foundation for the company's national contributions.
